It is the afternoon of Day 1 of SMX Advanced and it has been an amazing show so far. The weather is amazing, the venue is top notch and the speakers are incredibly knowledgeable.
One of the sessions today was on “Mythbusting PPC Urban Legands” with Scott Brinker, Reid Spice and Frederick Vallaeys. One of the key things that stood out for me was the discussion on long tail keywords. In the past, long tail KWs have been suspended due to low search volume, but according to Frederick, that is about to change. Google will be slowly reversing this in the next while and we should start seeing these terms come back online. Frederick also recommended using the search based keyword tool to reveal some of those long tails that you could be using. I guess if they came out with a tool to help you find long tails, they need to let you run ads for them!
Anther good discussion centered around “is broad match worthless?”. Queries of 3 words or more are gaining in share and as queries become longer it more difficult to predict what people are going to type in. Of course, broad match needs to be used correctly to be effective, but according to Google, broad match generates about 1/3 of clicks and conversions. As a side note, using broad match will not hurt your quality score and changing a keyword from broad to exact will not improve quality score. So run search query reports on a regular basis to watch those broad terms, bid differently on broad terms vs exact terms and use conversion optimizer.
Off to a keynote with Matt Cutts, will post more later.

Microsoft gave an impressive party last night at the Olympic Sculpture Park to launch “Bing”, their new search engine. There was entertainment, drinks, mountain and water views, and of course demonstrations of all that Bing offers. Bing is not just another “search” engine, but is a “decision” engine. They are promising a little something over the other everyday search engines. Bing will (they claim) make it easier for us to find and book flights & hotels, comparison shop, get relevant health info and retrieve useful local listings. I definitely did see a few cool features that I can see coming in handy, especially for image and video searches. And the home page itself is worth a visit. Give it a try at bing.com and let us know what you think.

You know the feeling. The days are getting longer, the sun is a little warmer, and you are feeling a little restless. Winter is becoming but a distant memory.
And we all know what that means – time for Spring Cleaning! No, I am not talking about the closets that you can barely shut or the dust bunnies setting up colonies under the bed. I am talking about your paid search campaigns. Be honest now….. when was the last time you really went through your stats, tested out some new ad copy, split tested a headline, or even just a button color? No need to start panicking as you are not alone. It is time to schedule in some campaign spring cleaning. Intentionally book some time in the next couple weeks to go through your campaigns. This may mean ignoring Twitter for a couple hours (gasp!), setting your IM to busy (who uses that any more anyways) and deleting those emails from Nigeria the next day.
Now, where to begin. Here are just a few ideas.
Adwords Search Query Report: You get automate this so you get a reminder email of a new report on the time frame you select. Great stuff.
Negatives keyword lists: Putting some time in developing a negative keyword list can have a great impact on your ROI (PSST…..You can buy negative keyword lists from http://www.epiar.com/ppc-negative-keyword-lists/) Your search query report can give you some ideas!
Ad copy: Tweak the headline or write some new ads. Do some split testing.
Ad groups: Do you have a really high performing keyword buried in an adgroup somewhere? Create its own special adgroup and adtext to maximize its effectiveness.
Landing pages: Are you using the same language as your ad? Will the use feel they have ended up in the right place? Is your call to action “above the fold”? Create a couple of variations of your landing pages and split test them.
I’m sure you are starting to get some ideas of you own! And those dust bunnies under the bed – they can wait.
