Gmail Crashes - Outage Met by User Frustration

October 13th, 2009 No comments

If you are one of the thousands who use Google’s email services, Gmail, for private or professional purposes, you probably experienced the widespread outage that occurred yesterday. According to Ben Treynor, Vice President of Google, the outage, which lasted for approximately 100 minutes, occurred after Google took a small portion of Gmail’s servers offline in order to perform “routine upgrades”—a practice that is done frequently without problem or glitch. So what went so wrong yesterday?

According to The Official Google Blog, at about “12:30 pm Pacific a few of the request routers became overloaded and in effect told the rest of the system “stop sending us traffic, we’re too slow!”. This transferred the load onto the remaining request routers, causing a few more of them to also become overloaded, and within minutes nearly all of the request routers were overloaded.” As a result, by early afternoon, many users were unable to access their Gmail accounts.

The response was almost immediate, as now email-less users turned to Facebook and Twitter to post messages of outrage. By a little after 3pm PST the Google engineers had gotten the Gmail system up and running again.

Users have remained wary. There is no way for Google to promise that the same thing will not happen again and this outage only adds to list of minor issues that Gmail has suffered in the past months—most notably a two and a half hour outage in February. This malfunction was just the latest is what the Wall Street Journal called “a series of service hiccups,” and continues to raise questions about the reliability of the Gmail system and Google’s management of that software. Ben Traynor tried to reassure using in a blog post, saying that the “outage was a Big Deal, and we’re treating it as such,” but users remain frustrated and Google will have to work to regain the confidence of its users.

Direct Agents Celebrates Labor Day in Central Park

October 13th, 2009 No comments

On Friday, September 4th, Direct Agents held its Annual Company Picnic in Central Park. Instead of coming to work dressed for a day at the office, employees went to Central Park ready to enjoy the sun and some good old fashioned games, like kickball.

The weather man was on our side and Friday was a gorgeous and sunny, albeit a bit hot, day. Lunch, refreshments, and dessert were all provided and enjoyed in between games. Advertising Sales Manager, Simon Gendelman’s only complaint was a “ridiculous farmer’s tan” which he acquired while “leading [his kickball] team to a dominating 10-0 shutout.” According to Gendelman, the picnic “helped unite all Agents,” and allowed the team to “get to know each other on a much more personal level.”

What better way to start off Labor Day weekend than with good food, fun in the sun, and friendly competition?! “The picnic was a blast,” says Jeffrey Lee, Advertising Sales Manager. “Can’t wait until the next one.” And with Labor Day now behind us and summer at a close, Direct Agents is looking forward to a great autumn.

We made it into the Inc. 5000, AGAIN!

October 13th, 2009 No comments

We’re proud to announce our inclusion into Inc Magazine’s list of the top 5000 fastest growing private businesses in America. This is our second year on the list. Direct Agents is also noted as one of the top 100 businesses in the tri state area (NY/NJ/PA) as well as the top 100 advertising/marketing companies in the U.S.

Inc Magazine’s list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy—America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. The Inc. 5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2005 through 2008. To qualify, companies must have been founded by the first week of 2005, and able to show four full calendar years of sales. Additionally, they have to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent as of December 31, 2008. Revenue in 2005 must have been at least $200,000, and revenue in 2008 must have been at least $2 million.

Direct Agents ranked at 1080 with a three year aggregate growth of 321.2%.  Our Managing Director and Cofounder, Dinesh Boaz is “humbled and honored to be included on a list of such prestigious companies.” He continues to “foremost thank [Direct Agents’] talented employees, without whom this growth would not be possible.”

Thank you everyone for your continued support! To view the press release, please click here.
