By now I’m sure you’ve all heard about the proposed Affiliate sale tax laws in many states. Until recently, online businesses have been sailing in uncharted waters, but it seems law
makers are now taking notice. Currently, California is considering a sales tax similar to the one passed in New York. The new law would impose a sales tax on all retailers engaged in business in the state, including online businesses and affiliates by definition.
Not surprisingly, Bill AB 178 is facing criticism by online retailers and affiliates alike. Affiliates are joining together and opposing this bill, citing increased confusion in dealing with different state tax laws. Some are even claiming this new law will mean an end to the affiliate industry.
So what can be done? For starters, we should all call our legislator’s office and let them know that we oppose this bill. Let them know the negative impacts this bill would have for affiliates, especially considering the current economic climate. I encourage you to learn more about this situation and do what you can to raise awareness.
